Letting Go, One Marble at a Time: Our Day at the Community Wellness Event
Earlier this week, Esha and Carrie from the Wholistic Perspective team spent the day at WISE's Sober Southington Kickball Event, a community wellness event bringing together local providers and neighbors who care about mental health. Rain moved everything from the infield to the outfield, but it didn't dampen the spirit of the day. Everyone who showed up was there with the same purpose: to support one another and find a little strength to keep moving forward.
We wanted our table to be more than brochures and business cards. We wanted to give people a moment to pause, breathe, and feel a little lighter when they walked away. So we brought marbles.
The Marble Jar: Let It Go, Take What You Need
The activity was simple:
1. Hold what feels heavy. Each person picked up a marble and held it tightly in their hand while thinking about something they had been carrying. It might have been frustration, sadness, anger, or something that happened that day.
2. Breathe and release. Next, they took a deep breath in, thinking about what they needed to let go of today. As they breathed out, they released it and dropped the marble into our "I Let It Go for Today" jar.
3. Take what you need. Then they replaced what they let go with something they needed more of. Our "Take What You Need" cards offered eight options:
- Calm
- Confidence
- Courage
- Healing
- Hope
- Joy
- Peace
- Strength
On the back of each card was an affirmation to take home as a reminder.
It's a small ritual, but it reflects something we believe in deeply. You don't have to solve everything at once. Sometimes it's enough to set something down, even just for today, so you can be more present with the people you're with tonight.
Kids, Teens, and Adults All Joined In
One of our favorite moments came from our very first participant, a five-year-old. When we asked him to think of something that made him mad or frustrated, he couldn't come up with anything. So we asked what made him happy that day instead. His answer: "Coming here."
It was a sweet reminder that this activity isn't only about hard feelings. Happy feelings count too, and noticing them matters just as much.
Teens and adults stepped up to the table as well, and many of them leaned in with real openness. It's not every day you walk up to a table at a community event and feel safe enough to be vulnerable, but that's exactly what happened. Some people shared what they were going through, and some simply dropped their marble, took a card, and smiled. Both are perfect.
Why Community Matters to Us
We may not have seen the biggest crowds, but we know we made a difference for the people who stopped by. Even if it was only a handful, those moments of connection are why we show up.
Our founder, Esha Bhardwaj, also spent the day connecting with other community providers and sharing resources. The more we know one another, the better we can help the people in our community find the right support when they need it.
As a small practice, we get to know the people we work with in a more personal way, and events like this are an extension of that. Mental health care starts long before someone books an appointment. It starts with feeling seen, heard, and a little less alone.
Come See the Marble Jar in Person
We loved this activity so much that we're bringing it home. The marble jar and Take What You Need cards will be set up at our office, starting with our upcoming ribbon cutting on October 14th at 12pm. Stop by, say hello, and let something go.
If you or someone you love is looking for support, we're here. Contact us to learn more about our services or schedule an appointment.
